This is probably the best description of the recruiting and interview process AND the expectations of the staff+ engineering roles Or at least what they should be Bravo Comment from : ICrashALot |
Sorry but this advice is absolute trash Tech companies focus 90 of their time on stupid leetcode questions which forces candidates to invest their time in that area Candidates are just adapting to the interview formats that they are most likely to encounter Maybe you worked at just 1 company for too long and only on the interviewer side and you're not in touch with the interviewee's side Comment from : pudgee012 |

faang interviews feel indeed strange to me brbri do get a perspective of cant code - no hire But leetcode is not adjusted for staff+ lvl engbrbri was interviewing to google a year or some ago and leetcode tasks were on the level of post grad Whilst system design and behavioral were medium complexitybrbrI m speaking from perspective of acting software solution architect And it feels strange that faang does not treat engineers of particular seniority appropriately Ofc i would not remember some specific dynamic programming cases Because the view on system is drastically different brbrIt is unfeasible to be deep in context of particular service when you are handling enterprise level system(s)brbrSys design interviewers did not even knew how requirements (func non func)are broken down and how concerns and constraints are managedbrbrWe ask about pure algo questions yet never bother to verify if person gets how multi paradigm programming works brbrEfficient algo does not mean efficient system We may have perfect algo yet not care about application of GoF patterns, mixing fp and oop styles, understanding how gc works, thread starvation, memory saturation, async and concurrent mechanisms, crdt, obj relational mapping impedance’s mismatch, loseless joins, networking (osi model at least)brbrThats like 99 of work Comment from : Dmytro |

I am a senior level software engineer but I gotta admit I really struggle with leetcode type problems I will still study more system design and behavioral questions but I feel like I need to up my game on those coding problems Comment from : Prince David |

My interview went really well I almost cleared all the loops behavioral, technical round, bar raiser, etc but they failed me in coding round because I didn't remember maph in STL (iterator), even though position was for non software, it was for systems engineer mostly hardware and systems Comment from : Theme Park & Tesla Camping 360 |
I love your channel thank you!! Comment from : jhors |
I would argue that a senior person would not necessarily need to prepare for system design nor leadership as they could answer questions and draw from their experience at will However, the senior person may need to spend more time on the leetcode style questions because those type of interviews didn’t exist when they got their first couple jobs Comment from : Robert Corbin |
Now that the labor market has shifted, would you change the percentages? Comment from : Learning X |

i got a extremely difficult questions on OA, which is the hard questions in leetcode, even i copy the question to my frd who is doing senior engineer from META, he also cant figure out how to solve it in 50mins i got luck to solve the question at last 3 mins the question is hard because it cover with a long story, and it is quite difficult to extract what is core problem of the questionbrbrbut i agree system design and behavior question is another import factors Comment from : Yiu Pang Yuen |

this guys is absolutely wrong I'm a PE at Amazon and all we do are leetcode problems Please actually do tech interviews in the industry At least all senior interviews I've conducted at Amazon are almost entirely leetcode based This is why Amazon code is terrible and the system is completely antiquated and bloated Amazon and all other FAANG are hiring the wrong way in that they hire entirely based on leetcode Comment from : Chih Chang |
You have a weird amount of wigs Comment from : Max Mustermann |

People who have been in the industry for a while know that the companies applying these recruitment processes are just not worth itbrbrThey are like the pizzeria that deliver flyers across the entire city One day you decide to go there and pizza is terrible But they don't need to have good pizza Because enough people go there to trybrbrBest case scenario You pass an interview like this and you are gonna find a toxic work culture where people constantly try to virtue signal and over expose their achievements while trying to screw anyone they may perceive as a threatbrbrMost likely case scenario In less that 1 year they replace you by someone who can do the same for 5 less money Because these kind of company is ALWAYS looking for marginal benefits That's why "it is impossible to inverview everyone properly"brbrMy advice is: Run away Comment from : Adrian Lopez |

Would love system design approaches A lot of content out there doesn’t show much an approach other than rote memorization You end up having to intake that information and manage how you apply it to your interviewer and risk losing engagement with your interviewer Comment from : Maroof Haque |

news: "A lot of engineers are needed in IT industry, we just can't find enough" brreality: One badly formed sentence in the theatre of interview and you are not needed :D I think we are one of the many reasons of the hypersensitive generation Comment from : dawheeler |
Hi! Could you recommend what to read/do to people, who has not a lot of free time and didn't have an opportunity to participate in system design/leadership in their jobs? How to learn something about it and get some experience? Comment from : Shadow |
All in all, you still need to be good at leetcode Leetcode is not sufficient but it's necessary Comment from : Happy Hacker |
Hi Steve (@ALifeEngineered), great video Thanks Please could you make a video on how to respond to Amazon's 16 leadership questions for Sr/Principal SDE roles? It might require video series Or writing a book series, which complements the SD books Comment from : Song |

Hi Stevebrbrgreat content as usual brquestion: what can be better: mix studying for coding & system design interviews (1 day/1 hr for coding and next 1 day/1 hr for system design) or focus on one part, finish it and switch to the other one?brthanks! Comment from : Aya |
"Let's get meta" is that what philosophy is called nowadays ? 🙂 an alcoholic, vinyl-lover !? Comment from : Mandibil |
The only way to get through all that tests is to become a machine Thats why FAANG employ only asians Comment from : Jeycode |
Amazon has the worst interview process among big tech where the interviewers waste 30 minutes asking behavioral questions and you are supposed to master the art of lying and the rest of the time goes to technical questions No wonder Amazon is the least favorite place to work for most talented engineers Comment from : ashok845 |
This information is pure gold Comment from : hsoloman |

Hey Steve, I really like your videos thanks a lot for the good work!brbrI am not an Engineer that has a dream company to work at, so I find myself in a situation where I need to find which is the right company for me, and during the interview process I am switching roles between being the interviewee and being the interviewer Therefore, it would be really nice to see a video with tips on how to find a good company, and how asset if the engineering environment is suitable for me, if the code-base is healthy, if the coding mentality and practices overlaps with my preferences, etc Obviously, everyone has different goals and ambitions when it comes to picking a work place, but I believe that there is a common layer that covers most Engineers (at least for Staff/Principal level) Just an idea! Comment from : Spyros Papaioannou |
I appreciate your opinion but I don't think it's the same for everyone, for me it's really easy to bullshit my way through any kind of non tech interview, I know what they want to hear, I am good at improvising stories and know how to sound convincing, I never failed a hiring process because of the non technical partsbrbrBut the technical interview? My smoke selling skills are useless there, either you know it or you don't That's why I only study for the technical part Comment from : J C |
The question here is, why do you have so many wigs? :P Comment from : Mauricio Vargas |

amazon cut me off even before the phone screen because I am still attending a georgia tech online masters program brwhich I told them nothing to worry about since full time work is much more important to mebrthe recruiter told me the best i can get would be an intern or part timebrI have been in the industry for 3 years and for the past year and now I am working for the home depotbrfrom that experience what I got is that Amazon tech interviews are garbage Comment from : W Jong |
