Four or five years ago I found an old penny that had accidentally been given to me in change, mistaken for a 2p How it had remained in circulation fifty years after it was redundant is a mystery Comment from : Elaine the Musician |

The UK, the only country in the world to resortto baby language mentality and using a vegetable to name its money denomination as "peas" What a load of dumbed-down cabbages I don't hearanyon in the USA or the Eurozone calling their cents "Cs" It's not "P" it's "pence" Comment from : Candolad |

I was 10 years old, a bit over a month-and-a-half out from my 11th birthday when decimal currency was introduced in 1966 using an animated cartoon featuring a character called *Dollar Bill*, voiced by Ian Turpie singing a jingle based on an old Australian folk song, "Click Go The Shears" The lyric went:brbrbIn come the Dollars and in come the Cents,/bbrbTo replace the Pounds, the Shillings and the Pence/bbrbBe prepare, folks when the coins begin to mix/bbrbOn the 14th of February, 1966!/bbrbrOn the day of the changeover, us kids going to Stockton Primary School lined up in front of the school canteen(long since demolished) while one of the teachers, a Mr Burns, exchanged our old threepenny, sixpence, shilling and two-chilling coins, as well as the copper half- and one-penny coins we may have had, into new 1- and 2-cent copper coins, 5-, 10-, 20- and perhaps 50-cent silver coins As kids, we were unlikely to be carrying any pounds(unless we were overweight! LOL) Comment from : Neil Forbes |
15th February, 1971? Five years and one day(by calendar, not by international dateline difference) bAFTER/b Australia made the change But we adopted the Dollar and Cent in spite of bPig Iron Bob/b Menzies, in ultra-cringe mode, wanting to call the currency "The Royal"! (UGH!) How embarrassing would that have been? Menzies always was a royal arse-licker! Good riddance to him! Comment from : Neil Forbes |
Interesting I remember the "Decimal Day" adverts I was four years old and they are the earliest things I remember from watching TV But I remember spending the sixpence in sweet shops for many years after They were accepted as being worth 2 and a half pence, weren't they? Or am I misremembering that? Comment from : Rhys Hughes |

That was the day that our spending power was slashed, money went much further with the old currency, spend 100 pennies of your pound today and you have nothing left, when we were pre-decimal, if we spent 100 pennies we still had 140 left, people who were not around at that time will never know what they missed out on, what a con job they pulled on us Comment from : Malcolm Henaughan |

I am too young to remember this - my dad was 12 so remembers it quite wellbrThe double prices reminds me of visiting France after the adoption of the Euro where you could see both prices displayed in shops brAs I was a primary teacher for 10 years, whenever we did units of measurement, I'd have a bit of fun by discussing the old units and watching the children look at me like I was telling them dragons really exist! Now they won't really need to show people what it means as we go into Digitalization cos it will be worth the same, this time next year we'll all be paying with just our Debit Cards or Phones in The UK by the sounds of it what Chancelor Rishi is saying the Scan & Go back in stores, the Decimal System using Physical Cash didn't last too long like 50 years, soon as the Decimal System arrived things were only gonna get more simplified from there on out brbrI can't imagine what could be next though or how they could simplify it even more but i defo don't want to implant anything cos we need 2 ways to pay for things the Phone and Debit Card unless they manage to work something out where we only need to use 1 way for everything again brbrIt's not going to be big single changes though where everyone changes over all at once after lie 50 - 100 years like it always has been but instead Businesses will always be changing to keep up with Technology cos it's evolving so quickly now so we'll all likely just have to keep changing with it but they'll do it in smaller changes as they go instead so we'll probs not want to get used to how we Pay for goods brbrI don't know how it could get better than Debit Cards though there's just nothing easier and can be used everywhere but whenever Currencies change it has to be open to everyone and make sure to not cause problems for the poorer class especially, so i've no idea what could be used next, they'll still have to teach numbers in The Decimal System though of course Comment from : FlyingMonkies325 |
