Comments Did Human Sacrifice Really Happen In Iron Age Britain?

Samuel Watterson
War is human sacrifice enmass as is capital punishment, people's wellbeing and lives are sacrificed all the time, for profit, for the benefit of others, it's weird that people get freaked out by the idea of the ancients sacrificing criminals, enemies and those who volunteer

The only two religions that Romans have ever banned were Druidism and Christianity and you bet they had good reasons to do so

Human sacrifice happens in every society through out history as the vril society's spread and conquered after there religion is prevalent here your history there formula for inter breeding and the takeover of humanity you swoop in with serpearior weapons and manpower remember these are the men of renown large beings with tall 6 fingers forehead red hair blue eyes large jaw far superior bread with our women after killing all every man in trib children kept for slaves and blood sacrifice eventually every culture taken by war killed in slaved and there crist cuntiousness bread out they present you with the his of the downfall of humanity and call it your religion and you suck it up and make it your own why does your history go back 6,000 years in your Bible it's because it's there story not yours humanity goes back hundreds of thousands of years why do you think we rap our women and children and blood sacrifice humanity we never did before 6,000 years agowak up people if you don't learn this how will you ever understand why we are what we are today? This is prevalent in the mentality I'll they don't understand why they are evil but when you no why you can combat it

Elephant in the room - why not mention Druids clearly portrayed in the writings of St Patrick, a contemporary

I think people need to remember that the Romans, especially Julius Caesar, are a hostile source Julius Caesar basically wiped out the Celts of Gaul At the time, even many Romans were horrified by the genocidal scale of the killing So I'm not sure I would take anything Julius Caesar had to say about the religion of the Celtic peoples at face value Caesar was highly motivated to demonize the Druids, in order to justify his murderous campaign against them One thing we know for sure: the Romans so feared the influence of the Druids, they sent a Roman army to the Island of Mona - sort of the Vatican of Druidic religion - slew the Druids and their defenders and burnt the sacred oak groves to the ground I actually agree that, odds are, the Druids may have committed human sacrifice Virtually all human societies have done horrible things to their fellow men Why would the Celts be any different? However, I still think we need to keep in mind that the Roman sources are hugely biased

Meanwhile, there are modern day druids around, so they clearly know more than these historians Why don't they ask them? ( :D )

I always think of my people's loss of the druids as many people think of the loss of the library of Alexandria for the people of the near east

Doubtless there were MANY different sects & cults, not one homogenous belief system since there would be different tribes and nations in different areas and things would evolve over time and with waves of migration One thing is pretty certain, they must have been a lot more hardcore than the stinky hippies pretending to be druids these days around Glastonbury, Stonehenge and so on

Respect for not treating history as a creative writing exercise, but to say murder/sacrifice was nice is unconscionable

We struggle with the idea of doing for our human loved ones what we willingly and greatfully do for our animal loved ones The living go on suffering either way Define sacrifice from every perspective

The rituals were different from place to place because they were organic They all grew from humans and nature

Oh come on, you know exactly who the Druids were They were the first Christians! Why exactly do we allow the English, who are apparently Germanics and weren't even on the island speak for the natives? The Roman records were forged in the 14th century by Poggio for the de Medici's

History Skills
This is great content once more Thank you I need to know more about the druids

The classical accounts are mostly from vague tales of soldiers, filtering into a skewed narrative and written as second hand half truths by people who had never been to Britain Ceaser's account is politically motivated The only credible source are the ancient British records, which are oddly ignored completely as usual The Druid cultural centre was Anglesey, Ynys Mon, where students from all over Europe went to study The teachings eminated out from Britain There are no Celts in Britain

On the Question of Relations Between Celts and ScythiansbrbrJ Rosen-PrzeworskabrbrAbstractbrA Bertrand, in his book, La Réligion des Gaulois, les Druides et le Druidisme, published in 1897, called attention to the great similarity in organization between the Celtic Druids, the monasteries of the Tibetan lamas, and shamanism in Siberia He was the first to publish statues of Celtic gods seated like Buddha Since that time the question of the relations between the Celts and the East, and in particular the Scythians, has been dealt with by many scholars: P Benkowski, J Dechelette, G Dottin, P Reinecke, P Gosser, H Hubert, M Jahn, M Enni, P Jakobstahl, G Kühn, M Minns, G Preidel, A Shakhmatov, A Spitsyn, M Rostovtsev, F Stakhelin, K Scheffold, M Vasmer, and others In 1930 these questions were dealt with in detail by the present author I also adduced the literature appearing prior to 1930 Field investigations subsequently conducted in the western oblasts of the Ukraine yielded new materials bearing on the problem with which we are concerned (the writings of M Smiszko and T Sulimirski)

I'm really glad to see a documentary film being honest about the things we don't know and the limitations of the available sources Very often pop-culture history presents a tentative theory as undisputed fact so it's refreshing to hear experts discuss these questions in a more open-ended way
